After losing several decisions in various federal courts, the IRS announced earlier this year that it would stop applying the federal excise tax on long-distance telephone service. The tax, which was first imposed in the late 19th century as a ‘luxury tax’ on people wealthy enough to have telephones in their homes, has been erroneously applied to long-distance phone calls, according to the courts.
Chinese telephone users exceed 800 mln
China now has more than 800 million telephone subscribers and more than half of them are mobile phones users, according to statistics from the Ministry of Information Industry.
